16 High Street has been a feature of Hinderwell village life since 1837 when as 'Skelton and Jefferson' the shop advertised the most astonishing range goods: 'Dress, mantle and costume making by the Cosmopolitan System', MAGNET Unshrinkable Shirting', as well as being a 'Boot & Shoe Warehouse'.
The Grocery & Provision Department advertised 'OUR SPECIAL BLENDED TEA' for one shilling and eightpence, which was 'of marvellous value and uniform strength'. There was also a 'Choice Stock of all GROCERIES and PROVISIONS alongside Home-made Jams, Marmalade and Jellies. In 1887 to mark fifty years of trading the shop advertised a MONSTRE JUBILEE SALE! "it is not only the Jubilee year of Her Most Gracious Majesty Queen Victoria's accession to the Throne of these Realms, but we are making it memorable by having our Jubilee Sale from WEDNESDAY 1 June, until the whole of the stock is removed. The readers are told to READ! JUDGE COMPARE! BUY! When in 1910 son of the shop's founders Mr William Jefferson died, it was reported that Hinderwell had lost one of its 'most highly respected and most esteemed residents.' In the mid 1900s the shop became a chemists, which closed in 2006 and 16 High Street taken over by Stephen and Sharon Sault, who have worked for months to convert the shop into a bistro to bring fine day-long dining to this part of the Yorkshire coast. The next chapter in the history of 16 High Street Hinderwell is being sketched as the Saults prepare to open bed and breakfast rooms on the upper floor and a delicatessen specializing in freshly made fine food on the lower floor, opening off Porret Lane. |
